Unique marketing ideas: using packaging to impress your customers and draw attention to your brand2/5/2018 Creative packaging can draw your target customer's attention to your product either on the retail shelf or online. Marketers understand the power of packaging to attract customers. 'Unique marketing ideas is using packaging to impress your customers and draw attention to your brand' [1]
Think about your product and brand. Think about what your competitors are doing: are you just one product among dozens that look similar on the retail shelf? do you stand out? do you attract your target market to pick up your product over the others? if not, what can you do to stand out? Keeping in mind shelf restrictions, could you supply a box with an unusual cut out shape? or even an unusual shaped box? foiled printing or design to catch light and people's attention? These quotes sum it up: 'While small businesses often see packaging as a cost they need to minimize, they may be overlooking its potential to help sell their product. Look at packaging not just as a way you are holding what you are producing, but as the silent salesperson. Your packaging is on the shelf communicating to people." [2] 'Packaging comes in every shape, every size, every material and every color—for every type of product imaginable. It’s the first impression we get about a product, but also represents the entire brand. A product might be fantastic with an equally killer logo, but awesome, trendy, on-brand, creative packaging is what really seals the deal. In fact, a box looks on a shelf or how a container feels in our hands can easily be the #1 factor in our decision to purchase a product. Is your brand a modern, funky brand? do you have modern funky packaging to attract your target market? what can you do to reflect your brand to your target audience to make them intrigued? 'Unlike other types of design, product packaging design results in something tangible. It’s more personal: we hold it, share it and carry it. In fact, packaging has become so personal that there are huge fanbases that just love packaging. Have you heard of “Unboxing” videos? Dozens of YouTube channels exist just to showcase the packaging of products like the iPhone, Apple Watch, PS4 and more.' [3] 'In today’s competitive business environment, product packaging is as crucial as the product itself. Apart from being visually appealing, your package design needs to be practical, (re)usable and make the consumer prefer your product over the competitor’s. Brands like Apple, who get it right, pay a lot of attention to the minutest details and create an experience around “unboxing” their products.' [4] 'Packaging is central to both how products are used and how they communicate benefits to consumers' [5] Review your packaging and think about ways you can make changes - big or small to attract your target market. Keep in mind shelf size restrictions and ensure you keep in mind your brand image when choosing design features as you don't want to attract the wrong audience (ie those that wont purchase your product, and alienate your target market). Below we have captured a few of our favourites. Photos credit: click on the photo to take you to the source.
Creating seasonal packaging for your product is a great way to increase sales during the various festive seasons throughout the year. People love to purchase products boxed in seasonal packaging for their friends, family, clients or colleagues and to get into the spirit of the season such as Christmas, Valentines Day & Easter. We have spotted some great Easter themed packaging ideas on the retail shelves and online. You don't have to be a chocolatier to take advantage of the Easter season! Nowadays, many people are looking for Easter gifts that are an alternative to the traditional chocolate gift, for many reasons....there is a market for your non-chocolate product during the Easter gift giving season. Think about what you could do with your product or packaging to make it desirable to purchase over the Easter season. Do you have a children's clothing store where you could package clothing in, in a unique Easter design themed box or even an Easter egg shaped box for sales in store or online? Do you have a soap business where you could sell soaps in Easter themed packaging or shapes at a market stall in the weeks coming up to Easter?.... Use your imagination and think if there is any way that your product or service could incorporate the Easter message or get into the Easter spirit with it's packaging or even with a slight change to the product itself. The newly designed packaging could pique curiosity of your brand if you (or your customers) share pictures of your Easter themed packaging on social media - especially if you have fun and unique packaging! You can always continue to stock your retailer's shelves with your regular branded packaging, but having packaging related to the season is a great idea to boost sales too. If you have a service business, you could also take advantage of the season to boost sales. You could take the opportunity to thank clients for their custom or try to attract new clients by sending them a corporate gift from your company in a cute, colourful, egg shaped rigid box (if that would suit your brand), or you could send a sleek invitation style box with 'Easter Greetings' or a message, embossed or foiled on the lid. Whatever your brand image, you can find a way to ensure your Easter packaging for your product or service fits in with your overall marketing strategy and brand image, to attract the attention of your target market and increase sales over the Easter season. *Please note, we do not specialise in supplying food packaging (but doesn't stop us from admiring it!) We look forward to hearing from you to discuss your bespoke bag or box needs! ABOUT US: Custom Printed Bags & Boxes can work with you to supply you with the perfect solution for your VIP gift box, promotional boxes, packaging supplies, event bags or retail bags for your special bespoke bag and box needs. Custom Printed Bags & Boxes New Zealand PO Box 106910, Auckland City 1143, New Zealand PH: (09) 930 7199 Email: admin@cpbab.co.nz www.cpbab.co.nz Custom Printed Bags & Boxes Australia PO Box 655, Balmain NSW 2041, Australia PH: (02) 8959 7455 Email: admin@cpbab.com.au www.cpbab.com.au There are several elements to consider when designing packaging for your product. Like any good design, packaging tells a story. It’s also a sensual experience, literally engaging us through sight, touch and sound (and possibly smell and taste, depending on the product/package). All of these details help us understand what the enclosed product is for, how it should be used, who should use it and, maybe most importantly, if we should buy a product or not. [1] Design / style What is the purpose of the box? Your design will depend on if it's a once off fun promotional gift box to promote a new product to your VIPs, or if its a retail packaging box destined for the retail or supermarket shelves. These are practical design considerations. Also think about who is the target market and what design will attract your target market? also think of fonts, colours, shape. What is your brand image? eco / funky / innovative? Try to create a packaging design that is functional, attractive and unique to help you stand out. Packaging is the last message a consumer sees and a last chance to convince them to buy the product. Clarity, honesty, authenticity play an important rule in this process. [3] Size What size of box do you need? If you are packaging a product/s then lay the product or products out on a table just as you would like to see them displayed in the box. Measure around the outside of the products - that way you can find out the size of box you need. Also tell the box manufacturer the size of each product and send them a picture of the layout - just so they can double check your measurements are correct or that the layout is the most attractive and / or effective way to present the products in the box. Paper stock for the box Is your product delicate? If so, you would require sturdy stock such as a rigid board box and/or inserts to hold the product in place. These insert options are discussed below. If your product is a non-breakable product - just as face cream in a plastic tube, a simple flat pack box with flap lid in thinner artpaper stock would be suitable. However if you have a high end product, a thick rigid board box would create an element of luxury for your product. Discuss with the box manufacturer what you hope to achieve with the look of the box, your brand image and the product that is going inside. They will be able to provide you with some options based on what would work best for your unique product and project needs. Inserts Inserts can be used as a presentation tool or as a protective measure - but often both are achievable. For example a wine bottle gift box can have a protective foam insert and be covered with satin inlay (see the example of the black box with satin below) - meaning the glass bottle is protected, but it looks luxurious, surrounded by ruffled satin. Inserts can be used to hold products in place in a larger gift box to present them beautifully. For example in the blue gift box below the products are protruding out to the custom coloured card insert. If you require a box with inserts, think about the practical function and aesthetics. Discuss your needs with your packaging supplier. If you require inserts, that often means the outer box size will need to be larger. So be sure to advise the packaging manufacturer of the size of the individual products that you are putting in the box so they can ensure the outer box is large enough to hold the products and provides some space for the foam or card insert border. For complicated insert design shapes you would likely require a Packaging Designer to create the dieline template. But check first with your box supplier if they can supply it or if it is beyond their capabilities. Printing Text, logo, images, legal information and a barcode considerations are important to discuss with your Graphic Designer. Think about special finishes like spot uv (gloss treatment), debossing, embossing, foiling (see gallery below for some examples). The first thing you need to consider when discussing with your Graphic Desginer who is creating the artwork, is making the purpose and brand of the product crystal clear. You can do this by prioritising the logo, product name and product description on the front-facing side of the package. This is without a doubt the most important thing you can do in your design—if what the packaging actually contains isn’t clear, the consumer will skim over it and buy something that’s more obvious. You also need to make sure you are designing for the target consumer. Many designers get swept up in designing packaging that they would likely buy, which no doubt makes for a pretty result, but this could end up alienating your target market. Do some market research into packaging in the same sector to get a sense of the colors, graphics and typefaces that feel appropriate for the product’s market. Another great tip is to design your packaging from an emotional perspective. We interact with dozens of packaged products every day; because we are saturated with visual information, it takes something with a real emotional pull for us to pay attention to it and ultimately purchase it. Emotional design can take many forms, targeting feelings of aspiration, nostalgia, joy, or even physical attraction. Keep the emotion at the forefront of your design and you’ll find that consumers are more naturally drawn to the product. [2] Your packaging supplier can often supply the dieline template of the box so your Graphic Designer can just pop the artwork on the dieline. Otherwise, you would need to find a Graphic Designer who also has packaging design skills to create the dieline for you. Competition What is your competition doing? if your product packaging is going to be sitting on the shelf in among your competitors you could easily be overlooked. What can you do to stand out whilst still keeping to your brand image and attracting your target market. Shelf impact is something you need to test and explore in your designs. You can do this by imitating the placement of your design on an actual shelf and surround it by other products (for best results, use several rows and columns of each product). The more distinctive it looks, the better it sells. Note: you will be amazed at the results – sometimes the best looking design will simply blend in and become invisible, while more simple designs “pop” in this environment. [3] Testing Feedback from your target market is vital to ensure your packaging communicates the right brand image and information, is attractive to your target market, holds the product well and attractively. You might not be your brand's target market - so don't assume you know what your market likes. For example if your target market is teenagers, be teenagers these days might be attracted to different colours, designs, images than you did when you were a teenager. The same with targeting different nationalities - different colours represnt different things. You dont want to be trying to break into a market and have your packaging represent death and misfortune. Many people would be put off. Market research can be employed to ensure that the packaging is on track with its intended objective. Early stages of package design: Before making some decisions on the direction of the package design, qualitative research such as focus groups can be used to explore what consumers within the target market are looking for. Opinions on currently available competitive designs can also be collected to estimate what package features are desired, which ones need to be improved, and what the market’s overall expectations are. Either in conjunction or as an alternative for qualitative research, a choice-based conjoint can be applied to measure the level of preference of a design. In a conjoint exercise, simulated packages can be created for research purposes based on a pre-defined set of dimensions (e.g. colour, package shape, text font, logo, etc.) and within each dimension a pre-defined set of levels (e.g. blue, green, red among the colours; square box, cone, cylinder among the shapes; etc.). These virtual packages are then tested in such a way that respondents’ preference for each level is determined, as well as determining the impact of each dimension on their overall packaging preference. This research can direct designers to a small number of options that would be most compelling to the target market. Later stages of package design: Once a shortlist of concepts has been established, these can be tested among consumers. This can again be done in either a qualitative or a quantitative framework, or both. Qualitative research can only be used if the concept packages can be viewed, manipulated, and handled in-person. In cases where this is not feasible, an online quantitative survey can be employed in which the concepts are presented. The testing of the concepts would first be in a monadic fashion, i.e. the sample is split into equal sub-groups, with each sub-group presented one concept on its own. The concept is then rated it on a scale on various measures (appeal, uniqueness, etc.). Then, other concepts are presented, and respondents are asked to compare which concept most stands on those same measures. Each concept can also be tested in a word association exercise (“old”, “novel”, “daring”, “boring”, etc.), and then mapped against each other on these descriptors. If you are an EA or PA - ensuring your custom made bag for your VIPs, special event, trade show, staff give-away gift bag, launch event bag, or any other bag need... is an important job to get right, so we thought we'd give you some guidelines on what you will need to consider when sourcing and purchasing your event bag: Your brand image: your bag needs to fit in with the brand image (look) of your corporation. You should be able to work with your Marketing team to gain their advice on what colour the bag should be, the quality of the bag, and even the shape of the bag - which can all relate to your brand image, and how people will perceive you - for example with the colours and shape of the bag, you could be seen as a fun, funky brand or a very serious formal brand. Size: the size of the bag is very important. You don't want a corporate bag that swallows up your product or giveaway, or a bag that is too small so that your flyers or promo items stick out the top in a messy and unprofessional way at your VIP event. Your product or event giveaways should fit neatly and snugly into the bag - the bag should be custom made to fit you product or your giveaway needs. Shape: if you really want to stand out from the crowd, you could source a bag that is an unusual or unexpected shape. It is bound to get people looking more closely at the bag (and at your brand). If you can, try to make your product corporate bag fun or memorable. Even if you are a serious brand, spot uv or embossing of the logo or design can make the corporate branded bag more luxurious and interesting. Colour: the colour of your bag should match your brand colour. That's why it's important that you source from a bag supplier that can custom print to your exact CMYK / PMS colour code requirements. Think of the colour blue for example: there are dozens upon dozens of shades of blue. The ANZ bank blue is a particular shade of blue which never changes; therefore when they order event bags, they would provide the bag supplier with the blue CMYK colour code that is unique to their brand. Printing: depending on your brand image or what the bags are used for, you can get creative with your printing needs. What about a call to action or unique pictures for a series of events that you hold throughout the year? with short runs you can make each event unique, you don't have to print just a generic logo on the bag and hand the same bag out at every event, in every shop, for every product pack bag you give out. Talk to your Graphic Designer or marketing professional about what you want to achieve - you might be surprised just what a bag can achieve in terms of communicating to your target market. Special printing features: this could include Spot UV, foil stamping, or letter press printing for example. Think about what you want to achieve with your bags - a high end look for special deleguates to your exclusive event? or a product packaging bag that will stand out on the shelves alongside your competitor's products? Your bag is a mini-billboard and should reflect not only your brand image, but should be used to communicate to your audience. First you've got to get their attention - and that's where special printing features can assist! Lamination: The type of lamination you choose on your bag, will depend on 'look' you want to achieve. Think of the brands on your level - are you a luxury brand that would need a high gloss look, or are you trying to project an earthy, environmentally friendly look, which a kraft paper bag could suit the brand image best? Or even a textured paper stock for a unique look and feel. Thickness: think about what your bag is needed for, and you will be able to choose the appropriate gsm or paper / cotton bag thickness. For example if you are packaging a heavy product in your product packaging bag, you would need to look at around 400gsm thickness, but if you're just after a classic boutique retail bag, you could get away with 200gsm, which looks good quality, and can hold clothing and other light items. Even if you are purchasing bags for events, you need to know how heavy the items are that you are going to put in them. If you are going to be placing a bottle of wine, a promotional item, a heavy brochure and other items, you need to ensure you source a bag that has a re-enforced base, thick material (paper or cotton) and has re-enforced handle holes so they don't break. We understand that each client's needs are unique - that's why we do not stock any standard bags. We custom make to your unique requirements. Custom Printed Bags & Boxes New Zealand PO Box 106910, Auckland City 1143, New Zealand PH: (09) 930 7199 Email: admin@cpbab.co.nz www.cpbab.co.nz Custom Printed Bags & Boxes Australia PO Box 655, Balmain NSW 2041, Australia PH: (02) 8959 7455 Email: admin@cpbab.com.au www.cpbab.com.au Designing a promotional gift box for a marketing campaign can be really fun! Working through the process of design, testing, prototyping and sampling can be simplified by following some simple steps. Before you commence designing the artwork, work out the following details so when you engage a packaging supplier the quoting and design process is as seamless as possible: 1) What products are going in the box? How will they be displayed? 2) Once you have laid the products out on the table that you will be including in the box, measure the items both individually and measure around all the items together with some space on either side (that way you will be able to find out the measurement of the inner box) 3) What branding will be on the box? will it be a simple 1 colour box with logo printed? or will it be a full colour box with embossing and gold foiling printing both inside and outside? 3) How will you present the products? Will you require a custom cut foam insert for each of the products? will you require a velvet overlay, over the foam? or a card insert with printing? if the products are an usual shape (eg bottles with curves or keys) you may require a Packaging Designer to create the CAD drawing for the foam insert dieline. If the shapes are simple squares or circles, often the packaging manufacturer can supply you with the dieline template for you, without having to engage a Packaging Designer. 4) What quantity do you require? This is important for the box manufacturer to know (as the larger the quantity, the lower the price per unit) and to give you a formal quote and let you know the turn around time for the job. 5) What date do you require the boxes to be delivered by? Sometimes it can take up to 3 months for your Graphic Designer to create and perfect the artwork design, the Packaging Designer to create the foam insert dieline, the manufacture and delivery of the prototype from the packaging supplier for you to test the box and the products in, time for making changes to the foam insert, box design or graphic design, for internal company approval through your marketing and finance team, and you would then require a few weeks (or months!) for box production and time for delivery. Box production and delivery could be anywhere from 4 - 11 weeks. Depending if it's air or sea shipment. We hope you enjoy the picture galleries below of some stunning bespoke gift boxes we have supplied our clients.
