Why You Need To Start Planning Your Christmas Packaging Today
Holiday season is still months away. It may be too early to get into a festive mood and start decorating your home, let alone buy Christmas presents for your loved ones. But if you own a business, there’s no better time to plan your Christmas packaging than now.
This is particularly true for most B2C businesses that cater directly to consumers. If you sell any kind of product online through social media, e-commerce platforms, or your own website; or if you happen to sell products through brick-and-mortar stores, there are several reasons why you should start working on seasonal packaging right away.
Reason #1: Panic buying is so last season
Last-minute shopping can be stressful and nerve-wracking. Today’s buyers are smart enough to realise this. Rather than put up with long lines and frenzied crowds, or risk settling for less-than-ideal-gifts because the supplies ran out, most people begin shopping months ahead.
Market research company Chadwick Martin Bailey (CMB Info) reveals that as much as 10 percent of consumers start buying Christmas presents in September. It increases to 17 percent by October and peaks at 36 percent by November.
The survey from CMB Info also shows us that while a significant 19 percent of people shop in December, 74 percent of buyers do their shopping before the holidays. (Note: I didn’t include statistics for January when people are likely purchasing late presents, not early gifts for Christmas)
Unless you want to miss this opportunity, you should get Christmas packaging way before the holidays go into full-swing.
Reason #2: Your customers get instant Christmas presents
Not everyone will have the time to wrap their gifts for the holidays. There are also people who don’t want to spend on additional wrapping. By providing Christmas-themed packaging, your customers wouldn’t have to worry about anything else. They can just buy from you, fill out the card, and instantly give away your products as gifts!
Reason #3: Think of it as free advertising
When people receive your products as gifts, the first thing they will notice is your packaging. If you managed to brand it – and we highly recommend that you do – they might consider purchasing your products and gift them to their loved ones.
Reason #4: You need time to prepare
We can’t stress enough how important it is to have quality packaging. If you want to entice people to buy your products as Christmas presents, then they have to come in packaging with a seasonal design.
You also have to consider that most of your customers will be travelling with your products to hand them out personally as gifts. Others will ship them out to friends and family who live far away. Hence, your packaging has to be strong enough to hold your products during shipment and long trips.
To create packaging that will bring smiles to everyone this holiday season (while increasing sales!) you need to:
• Plan the design of your Christmas packaging
• Incorporate your branding into the design
• Carefully choose the materials of your packaging
• Do a real-world test of your packaging
If you start early, you’d be able to cater to customers who shop months before the holidays.
